It is not surprising that Mo Willems would win the Geisel award for the most distinguished American book for beginning readers written in English. His books are a hit with young readers and THERE IS A BIRD ON YOUR HEAD! won the award this year. The repetition of language, large font, and simple story line makes it a fun and easy read for young readers.
Elephant finds a bird on his head and is not happy about it. His friend Piggie updates him on every change that is occurring on his head. It soon becomes two love birds building a nest with three eggs on his head. The chicks hatch, and Elephant does not want them on his head. He asks Piggie what he should do. Piggie recommends that he ask them to leave which they do. They move to Piggie's head!
What a cute book for young readers! The repetition, simple drawing, easy words, large font, and clear and simple story will make it easy for the readers and be fun at the same time.
